frequently asked questions

What is ranking up?

Sword Tag uses a leveling system that we call the Ranking System. At lower ranks, players use smaller boffers. As people rank up and gain more skill, they can use bigger boffers and different types of boffers.

People rank up by demonstrating different values, knowledge, and skills. Each rank has unique values and tasks that must be completed. The process for how this is done is explained below. Each Rank is also listed below for you to explore!

How do I rank up?

Every Participant starts off as a Squire (Level 1). To move from one Rank (or level) to the next, you must meet the requirements for the next Rank. If you are a Squire, the next Rank is Knight (level 2). There are seven Ranks in total. So what is the in-game road-map to ranking up? How does it work? Let’s go through it step-by-step:

1 Come to Lords & Ladies’ Sword Tag Gatherings. You need to attend at least 3 Gatherings between each Rank. While you are there, you must practice and show the values of the next Rank. For example, if you are a Squire, you need to show the values of a Knight: Respect and Self-Control. You must also practice the skills and rules that you need to progress to the next rank.

2 Observation and Tasks. When you are in a game, at the main area, or talking to an someone, the people in the Rank above you can observe you. They will check for the values you are supposed to be working on. You may also have other things you need to complete to be ready to rank up. Please check out the links above to see the tasks and values that each Rank needs to work on.

3 Ranking Circles. At the end of each day, all players will gather in different Circles. Knights will go with Knights, Cavaliers will go with Cavaliers, and so on. Squires will go to train with an Instructor. Each Circle will discuss the Rank below them. They will talk about who has finished their tasks and who is following the values. If someone has completed their tasks and is following the values, they Circle will approve them to be ranked up. If they are not ready, the Circle will talk about how to help that person.

4 Ranking Ceremony. At the end of a Sword Tag day, all players will come together to sit in a circle. If a player has finished everything they need to do, they will be called up by a Marshal. If they are a Squire ranking up to a Knight, they will be asked if they know the rules and if they are ready to explain the rules in front of everyone. If they are any other rank, there are oaths that they must swear. After the ceremony, they are a new rank! They can use the boffers of that rank.
