Laurels & Leaders

Part Ii: Shields

Shields are an integral part of our game and come with their own challenges and rewards. Unlike the rank-based progression that is part of the game with boffers, shields do not have any rank requirements. Shields are subject to the limitations of the six-foot rule (see General Loadout Rules)

The maximum shield size for now is 36 tall x 24 wide. If the shield is generally round, it may be up to 29 inches in diameter (I measured a disc sled and it was about 27 inches across).

Closed cell foam padding of at least ½ inch thickness is required on all edges of any shield that is brought onto the field. This is usually accomplished with pipe insulation or pool noodle cut lengthwise.

Since they are not used to tag other players, shields intentionally have very broad rules regarding their construction. Marshals are encouraged to use Equipment Rule Zero when in doubt and take note of shield designs and patterns that lead to problems, so that they can be addressed in future versions of this document.
