Single-Ended Staff

Single-Ended Staff blueprint

Single-ended staff Rules

Staff boffers are long single wield boffers that are used exclusively by the Noble ranks (Dragoon, Lancer, and Sentinel) or Marshals. The single-ended staff is a glaive-like boffer with a regular pool noodle “blade” on one end, and a pommel on the other. The allowed lengths of “thumper” are longer than its counterpart, the Double-Ended Staff. The table below covers the allowable lengths and wielding requirements by rank:

*This is the rank of the boffer, not the player. A player can always use a lower rank’s equipment.

**”Dual” means that the boffer can be used with another boffer, if the player’s rank permits and so long as the loadout does not exceed 6 feet in length. “Single” means that the boffer can only be wielded alone.

In addition to the rules outlined in the above blueprint and table:
  1. The haft or core of this boffer shall consist of a single piece of ¾ inch schedule 40 PVC pipe. No splices are allowed.
  2. The non-tagging end shall have a standard Pommel
  3. Both “blades” shall have at least ¾ inch closed cell foam at the Thrusting Tips. The blades or “thumpers” should be at least 2 ½ inches in diameter and are allowed to be up to 4 inches in diameter. The length requirements are shown in the table above.
  4. Courtesy foam shall be placed as shown in the blueprint above and shall otherwise follow General Construction Rule 3 (below). In any case, there should be at least 2 inches of courtesy foam at the base of each thumper.
    • All non-sword boffers (other than spears and double ended staves) shall have the haft (core) covered with at least ½ inch thick closed cell foam from the tag end (axe head, mace head, glaive blade, etc.) to a point that is in the middle of the boffer lengthwise. If a boffer is 50 or more inches in length, this measurement is fixed at 25 inches.
  5. Staff boffers are otherwise governed by Equipment Rule Zero:
    • When deciding if equipment should be allowed on the field, an Instructor always has the option to say “no” in the name of safety. This applies even if the boffer or shield otherwise meets requirements. Our rules as to what is and is not allowed are not all encompassing.
