Spear Rules
A spear boffer is a long boffer that can only be used to tag with the very tip. Because it cannot be swung to tag with the sides, it has a few special rules governing its use and creation The table below covers the allowable lengths and wielding requirements by rank:
Rank | Squire | Knight | D. Knight | Cavalier | Dragoon | Lancer | Sentinel |
Band Color* | Red | Orange | Yellow | Green | Blue | Purple | Pink |
Max Length | – | – | – | 43 – 50″ | 50 – 62″ | 62 – 74″ | 62 – 74″ |
Wielding** | – | – | – | Dual | Single | Single | Single |
*This is the rank of the boffer, not the player. A player can always use a lower rank’s equipment.
**”Dual” means that the boffer can be used with another boffer, if the player’s rank permits and so long as the loadout does not exceed 6 feet in length. “Single” means that the boffer can only be wielded alone.
In addition to the rules outlined in the above blueprint and table:
- The haft or core of a spear boffer shall consist of a single piece of ¾ inch schedule 40 PVC pipe.
- The non-tagging end of a sword boffer shall have a standard Pommel.
- The tag end of a spear shall have at least ¾ inch closed cell foam on the Thrusting Tip. The thrusting tip shall be between 2 and 3 ½ inches in diameter.
- The haft shall have courtesy foam covering of at least ½ inch in thickness that covers from the thrusting tip all the way to a point 18 inches from that point along the haft. An inspecting Marshal should give 2 inches of “wiggle room” in either direction.
- Spears shall have a color-coded rank band placed on the haft immediately after the protective foam area described above.
- Spears have a minimum length of 43 inches, this again is to make them easy to tell apart from other boffers.
- Spear boffers that are 62 or more inches in length shall have Enhanced Thrusting Tips.
